Peer Mentor Program

The Peer Mentor Program is one of the backbones of MHDS and strongly supports the tenet of peers helping peers. MHDS Peer Mentors are upper-year students registered with the service who are familiar with the accommodation process and with York campus resources. In their role as service ambassadors, peer mentors help other students find the supports and services they are looking for on campus and are available as a source of support and guidance.

Hi my name is Chaya and I’m looking forward to being one of your peer mentors this year!  I am an upper year student in the York Seneca Rehabilitation Program.  I will be graduating with a BA in Psychology from York University and a Certificate in Rehabilitative Services from Seneca College.  My interests include writing, yoga, reading, listening to spoken word poetry, cooking, baking, volunteering, and helping others.  My passions are dogs (actually all animals), learning, and advocacy.  As a student that has been navigating the “YU Jungle” for a few years now, I know how exciting and enriching yet challenging and overwhelming this chapter of one’s life can be.  With this in mind, please feel free to drop-in or make an appointment just to chat, get some information, or de-stress; basically it’s a space for whatever you may need in the moment!  I believe that university can be a key space for creating meaningful connections and I hope to, in the very least, be a friendly face on YU’s Keele campus!  The programming I help with at MHDS includes the Meet-Up, Self-Advocacy workshop, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.  You can find me in the MHDS Peer Mentor Office on Tuesdays from 11:00am-12:00pm.  I hope to see you there!

Hey! I’m James! I am a visual arts student in my fourth year. I am passionate about a lot of things and right now I would like draw storyboards, or maybe get fifty followers on my instagram (not mutuals). I want to travel someday, but nowhere too wild. Somewhere like New York City. I am excited to work with students and help them succeed at York. While it can be difficult to integrate with the community of a commuter school, I have been able to be involved in many art shows and joined a variety of clubs. This has enriched my time here and made me feel like I am part of something. Similarly, I hope to help empower students to take advantage of the opportunities on campus that most interest them.

Hi there, I’m Madelyn Newman and I’m thrilled to be a part of the Peer Mentor team this academic year.  I am an upper year student, working on finishing my undergraduate degree in psychology.  I am very passionate about mental wellbeing, and ending the stigma associated with mental illness by engaging in open and honest conversations about mental health.  I’m very excited to meet so many of you at our events and workshops!  Please feel free to drop by my office hour for a chat Wednesday afternoons between 1:00PM and 2:00PM.

Hi, my name is Christina DeFranco and I’m a third year student majoring in Kinesiology. My biggest passions are health, fitness, and helping others! Are you wondering how to access the campus gym, find the bookstore, or simply looking for a quiet place on campus to study, then drop by my office every Friday between 10:00am and 11:00am.  I can help connect you with useful campus resources, answer any questions you might have or I’m here if you’d just like to talk! I also run Flow Yoga and Mindfulness in Motion here at MHDS, come calm your mind and reduce stress with me in a safe and welcoming environment!
